วันนี้พวกเราไป The Orchards กันมาครับ

เมื่อสองอาทิตย์ที่แล้ว Jonathan ได้รับ Offer จาก Google ให้เรียนที่ Google’s Pre-school – The Orchards โดยเริ่มวันที่ Dec 1

ชายจะตามรอยเท้า Daddy ไปแล้วครับ กำลังจะรับ offer เป็น Googler – ดูแด๊ดดี้เป็น role model

วันนี้เราไป Tour โรงเรียนกันก่อนตัดสินใจ ก่อนหน้านี้ก็ไปดูหลายที่แล้วครับ ไปลองด้วย ที่ CPSC กับ CCLC

The Orchards นี้อยู่ Sunnyvale  – เมืองแดดดี (sunny) สะกดภาษาไทย คล้าย เมืองแด๊ดดี้แฮะ

ฟังว่าอยู่ Sunnyvale ตอนแรกก็คิดว่าไกลนะ แต่พอขับไปจริงก็ไม่ไกล รร อยู่ขอบแดน Mountain View กับ Sunnyvale

มี highway สาย 85 ตัดผ่านการเดินทางก็สะดวกดี จากบ้านขับรถไป 15-20 นาที เลยที่ทำงาน daddy ไปไม่ถึง 10 นาที

ที่ทำงาน daddy ห่างจากบ้าน 15 นาที

ไปถึงที่ lobby หมีน้อยก็ไปเล่นฝาหลากสีบนโต๊ะมีไฟสีขาว ท่าทางน่าสนุก

ที่นี่มี kids’ chef ด้วย ทำอาหารสุขภาพให้เด็ก Googlers กิน มื้อกลางวัน ดีจัง กินของสุขภาพของฝรั่ง เช่น lentil, squash

พอไปถึงห้องเรียนที่หมีน้อยจะไป ชื่อห้อง  Kumquat น่าประทับใจมาก

Kumquat นี่เป็นผลไม้นะ แด๊ดดี้กับมะม๊ะก็เคยงงมาแล้วว่ามันคือลูกอะไรตอนหมีน้อยอยู่ในท้อง ตอนนั้นหนังสือบอกว่าหมีน้อยตัวเท่าไอ้เจ้า kumquat นี่แหละ

เห็นอีกก็งงอีก ชื่อตลกพิลึก

ต่อครับ ในห้องกว้างขวางมากเลย ใหญ่ที่สุดในห้อง infant/toddler ทั้งหมดที่ไปดูมา ให้ความรู้สึกเหมือนบ้าน

ของเล่นต่างๆก็ทำจากวัสดุธรรมชาติ วัสดุ recycle สีไม่แปร๊นๆนะ ไม่มีพวกของใส่ถ่าน Fisher-Price, Leapfrog, VTech เลย

เป็นภาพที่แปลกตา มากจ้ะ มีแต่ของใช้ที่โจนาธานชอบเล่นเช่น ขวดพลาสติก กระดาษ หวาย ไม้ กล่อง ฝา อะไรพวกนี้

ห้องนอนก็น่าจะเก็บเสียงดี ต่างจากที่อื่น เพราะที่นี่กั้นเป็นห้องนอนให้เลย

ส่วน outdoor ก็ดูแล้ว ปลอดภัย accessible ด้วย

ครูบอกว่า บางวันก็เปิดประตูไปส่วน outdoor ค้างไว้ มีครูเฝ้าข้างนอกหนึ่งคน ข้างในหนึ่งคน

ข้างนอกมีหญ้าปลอมที่เหมือนจริงมาก พื้นก็บุหนา มีแปลงผักให้เด็กเล็กเล่นด้วย มามะก็กลัวโจนาธานจะเด็ดกิน แต่ Kelly บอกว่ากินก็ไม่เป็นไร lettuce… มะกลัวหมีน้อยกินดินมากกว่าน่ะสิ (==’)

ที่นี่เป็นโรงเรียนประเภท Reggio Emilia เค้าเน้นว่าเด็ก capable, competent, and wise

ให้เด็กสร้างหลักสูตรของตัวเองโดยมีครูช่วยเสริม เล่นเต็มที่ เรียนรู้จากการเล่นและเสาะแสวง มามะกับแด๊ดดี้ว่าเหมาะกับโจนาธาน เพราะลูกหมีน้อยชอบเรียนรู้ด้วยตนเอง ไม่ชอบอยู่นิ่ง

ท่าทางไม่ชอบการสอนแบบ structure ด้วย ชอบค้นหาด้วยตัวเองมากกว่าใช่มั๊ยจ๊ะ

อ้อ ถ้าเราเลือกที่นี่ ครูสามคนของห้อง Kumquat จะมาเยี่ยมเราที่บ้านด้วยนะจ๊ะ เค้าจะมาดูว่า หมีน้อยอยู่บ้านเป็นยังไง มามะกับแด๊ดดี้เลี้ยงยังไง

เค้าจะได้เข้าใจหมีน้อยมากขึ้น

วันนี้ก่อนกลับมามะเล่านิทานเรื่อง Baby of the World ให้ฟังด้วย สนุกเนอะ Daddy สนใจใหญ่เลยล่ะ 😉

I woke up at 10:30 today. Yesterday I napped too long, making us miss the tour at the Wetlands. But it’s ok ‘coz daddy and mama say it’s too detached and the people are not so welcoming anyway. It’s also a two-story building, which is not very child-friendly. More importantly, the Orchard is very nice — perhaps nicer than the Wetlands (even the office manager said her kids go to the Orchard). I like the Orchard a lot already.

I had Apple yogurt and Cheddar cheese for breakfast. It was a great morning for all of us. We went to Borders, where I had a blast. I crawled around and played with a stuffed big dog. Daddy read One Piece manga, while mama looked for books about infant and toddler curriculum. In the end, daddy and mama got a book about 50 states and an animal picture book. Daddy selected “Why I Love My Daddy,” and mama got “Einstein Never Used Flash Cards.” As you can see, all the books are for me. Daddy and mama love me very much. Mama got that book because it follows the very progressive Reggio Emilia principle, just like Google’s Orchard. Mama wants to truly buy the principle of play-based child-led learning, and wants to make sure that I won’t lack behind too much when I enter a regular kindergarten system later and that I will have a passion for reading even though I’ll spend my days playing and building my own curriculum. Mama is a bit hesitant about me being in the learning center at such an extreme end. But mama and daddy discussed and thought that the Orchard is the best. Well, Google is top-notched and what they do should be great. In terms of my future, mama and daddy think that I could be a perfect fit for HCI after coming out of the Reggio Emilia system. Also, it seems like I am competent and am passionate about learning things by myself.

After my brief nap, we went to the Orchard. Today I met my teachers — Lena and Jordana. They are cool and caring. My Kumquat room is as cool as ever. I also met my friends — Finn, Orla, and Ella. I played with the wooden cars, bottles, and chimes outdoor. What fun!

On the way home, mama tried to give me banana, which I don’t like anymore. I wanted to have snacks, but for some reasons the cheese biscuits were nowhere to be found… Now my food preference has changed. I don’t like what I used to like. I still like peaches though — too bad they’re out of season. But bland pureed food is not my favorite anymore. Now my No. 1 real food is chicken — big chunks — as I told mama since I was in the womb. I’m also back to bottles. Though I can now drink with straws, I prefer flavored milk in Dr. Brown’s bottles.

Today I finger-pointed at both daddy and mama very often. I also stood up on my own (though couldn’t stand for a few seconds). And I got my fingers in the drawer, calling mama~ to help as mama didn’t seem to care enough. I had so much fun before I went to bed. After mama’s shower, she came looking for me while I was playing with daddy (“Oh Jonathan!!! It’s time for bed nowwww…”) I gave her my biggest smile, crawled over to her, and climbed her legs so that she picked me up. I took a shower, and then drank 3 oz. of Vanilla Silk (6 oz. of Horizon this morning) and loved hearing Pookie stories/ Personal Penguin over and over. Mama helped me pretend to be Pookie, surprising daddy as I was behind the blanket. Daddy was so naive. He was surprised every time I pulled down the blanket!

I also love my Google balls. They’re so bouncy and flashy.
